"gye nyame"

"gye nyame" painted in 2006. it reads: "This great panorama of creation dates back to time immortal. no one lives who saw its beginning and no one will live to see its end, i fear none. except for god." (gye nyame is an adinkra symbol, see below). I painted this one night before I was "let go" from my place of employment, however, because I was focused on this concept, I felt just fine. That opportunity gave me a chance to step out further into my art and painting career. with god on our side, whom shall we fear? No one and nothing. AMEN!

$20

Adinkra are visual symbols that represent concepts or aphorisms. Each symbols has its unique meaning, many involving ideas of the spirit or God. These symbols came initially from the Ashanti people of Ghana but also produced by the Gyaman people of Ivory Coast. Around the 19th Century, the Ashanti developed a unique art of Adinkra printing cloths, made and used exclusively by royalty and spiritual leaders for sacred ceremonies.
